Frequently asked questions

RookHelm, the hosted SourceBans and SourceComms alternative

What RookHelm does, how it compares to self-hosted SourceMod admin tooling, and how to bring your existing bans and mutes with you.

What is RookHelm?

RookHelm is a cloud-hosted platform for community game-server operators. It centralizes bans, mutes, admins, and player history for a whole fleet of Source-engine servers in one dashboard, with Discord integration, anti-raid admission control, and a public portal where players can look up their ban status and appeal. It is a hosted alternative to self-managed SourceMod admin tooling like SourceBans++ and SourceComms.

What is a good hosted SourceBans alternative?

RookHelm is a hosted, fully-managed alternative to self-hosted SourceBans and SourceBans++. Instead of running your own cPanel, PHP, and MySQL stack, you get shared ban lists across every server you run, a public ban portal, and Discord alerts out of the box. SourceBans++ itself points to RookHelm as its commercial hosted option, while staying free to self-host.

How do I manage bans across multiple Source servers?

RookHelm gives every server in your community one shared ban database. Issue a ban on any server and your whole fleet enforces it immediately - permanent or timed, with the reason, server, and issuing admin on record. There is no per-server ban file to sync and no cap on how many bans you carry, on any plan.

Is RookHelm a hosted SourceComms alternative for mutes and gags?

Yes. RookHelm centralizes mute and gag enforcement across your fleet, the comms moderation that SourceComms handles per server. Mutes and gags apply community-wide, post to Discord the moment they happen, and show up on the player's record next to their bans. Existing mutes come across when you import from SourceBans++.

How do I migrate from SourceBans++ to RookHelm?

Run the export script against your SourceBans++ instance to produce an export bundle, then upload it from your RookHelm dashboard. RookHelm brings over your full ban history, players, mutes, admins, and audit log, with no cap on how many bans you carry. Your existing SourceBans++ install keeps running until you decide to switch over.

Do I still need to self-host SourceBans++?

No. RookHelm replaces the self-hosted SourceBans++ and SourceComms stack with a managed dashboard, so there is no server, database, or PHP version to maintain. Self-hosting SourceBans++ stays free and is a fine choice if you prefer to run your own infrastructure - RookHelm is for operators who would rather not.

Which games does RookHelm support?

Any Source-engine game that runs SourceMod, including Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Left 4 Dead 2, and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. One plugin bundle runs on all of them, so support is not an allowlist. CS2 is supported through the SwiftlyS2 plugin framework.

How does RookHelm connect to my game servers?

You download a pre-filled plugin bundle from the Servers page, drop it into your game server, and restart. The server enrolls itself and appears under Pending servers within a minute; one click adopts it and bans start flowing. The same bundle works for every server in your community, so adding the rest of your fleet is just repeating that step.

Does RookHelm send ban and mute notifications to Discord?

Yes. Every ban and mute posts to your Discord channels the moment it happens, with the player, reason, duration, server, and the admin who issued it. Community standing also syncs to Discord roles automatically, and players can link their Steam and Discord accounts.

Can players look up their bans and appeal?

Yes. Every community gets a public lookup page where players search their SteamID, see exactly why and for how long they were banned, and file an appeal without opening a ticket in your Discord. The same portal carries a live server list. Appeals are available on the Hobby plan and up; on Network and up you can host the portal on your own domain with your branding.

How much does RookHelm cost?

Plans are per community, billed monthly: Free ($0), Hobby ($12/mo), Team ($29/mo), Network ($79/mo), and Hoster (from $400/mo, contact sales). Bans are unlimited on every plan. RookHelm is currently in private alpha and free for everyone while it lasts.
